Kangaroo Island Fur Seal II
Kangaroo Island lies off the mainland of South Australia, southwest of Adelaide. Over a third of the island is protected in nature reserves, home to native wildlife like sea lions, koalas and diverse bird species.
The long nosed fur seal was once an endangered mammal on the island, with their numbers dwindling in the hundreds due to their harvest by early European settlers. Today the shores of KI are now home to a population of almost 100 000 of these seals. These fascinating creatures can range in size from tiny pups to 250kg full grown males that can reach as long as 2m. They can dive to depths of up to 380m, which is the deepest of all fur seals.
