Siberian Ice Shards
Lake Baikal lies in remote southern Siberia near the Mongolain border. Every winter the largest freshwater of body on the planet completely freezes over creating a wonderland. Out in the center of the frozen lake chunks of jagged ice are pushed up through the cracks of the slowly shifting surface. Forces of nature and weather are at work, rearranging the vast icy stretch between the shores in new and unique arrangements everyday. A continuous remaking of the frozen void, creating crystal like sculptures from the deep.
At more than 25 below the air seems to hold onto the rising light, filtering it through its chilly fingers and diffusing it in a gentle glow all around us. Our footsteps are left on the shallow layer of snow and the rubber souls of our winter boots squeak on the polished ice below it.
