The Sentinels
This image was captured from the Sea Ice, Northwest Spitsbergen National Park, Svalbard. Sea ice is frozen seawater that floats on the ocean surface it forms in both the Arctic and the Antarctic in each hemisphere's winter, and it retreats, but does not completely disappear, in the summer. It plays an important role for the climate and ecosystems.
Svea is a colourful old mining community 40km south of Longyearbyen, Svalbard. In the heyday of coal mining in the 1980's, up to 350 miners worked here in frigid conditions.
