The Green Lion Hotel was built in 1852, possibly on this site, and was destroyed by fire in 1857. A new Green Lion was rebuilt on this site in the same year, renamed the Caledonian in 1860, and again renamed the Post Office Hotel before its demolition in 1912. The present building was then erected and named the Arcadia - that name can be clearly seen on the top gable. In 1935, the hotel was renamed the Country Club
