Lake Baikal Winter Siberia
Deep in south-east Siberia lies the oldest lake in the world, 3.15-million-ha of pure fresh water which adds up to 20% of the world's total unfrozen freshwater reserve in the summer. In the heart of winter though it completely freezes over to form a winter paradise of Ice and wonder.
Known as the 'Galapagos of Russia', its age and isolation have produced one of the world's richest and most unusual freshwater faunas, which is of exceptional value to science. The ice appears black and cracked with expanding and shrinking as temperatures rise and plummet.
