Lying almost concentrically around the South Pole, Antarctica is fifth in size among the world’s continents its landmass almost wholly covered by a vast ice sheet. Its name of which means “opposite to the Arctic”—is the southernmost continent on the planet and it covers about 5.5 million square miles.

Because of this vast ice, the continent supports only a primitive indigenous population of cold-adapted land plants and animals. However the surrounding sea is as rich in life as the land is barren. The ice-choked and stormy seas around Antarctica long hindered exploration by wooden-hulled ships but now see yearly visits in the summer months for those keen adventures who can't help but go see the beauty for themselves.
