During the reign of Peter the Great, the tsar was obsessed with forming a strong navy. Russia only had one seaport in the far north which led Peter to believe it necessary to build another in St Petersburg on the bank of the Neva River. Thus the Admiralty began its life as a fortified shipyard in 1704 and still today you can visit the pale yellow buildings that housed the Admiralty just opposite the Winter Palace.

The Park that houses the pale yellow buildings of the Russian Navy is large and beautiful, especially in the dead of winter with the many trees heavily laden with snow.  The paths are formal and edged in ironwork, there are many statues of famous Russian hero's and it's not unusual to see the locals glide by on skis.
